Here are a few books I have. Some are more technical than others, but they are all worth reading. Unfortunately most of these books are out of print, so you may struggle to get hold of them.

Title: Automatic Telephones.
Author: F.A. Ellson.
Published: Pitmans Primers 1924.

Ellson was a GPO Engineer and the book details the UK automatic telephone system at the time. The ATM system is featured and the book compares this to other auto systems. The main features of the ATM Director system are also discussed. This is a very interesting read.

Title: Telephony.
Author: Herbert & Procter / Atkinson.
Published: Pitmans.

There are two versions of this book. The pre World War Two edition is by Herbert and Procter. The post-war revised edition is by Atkinson. Both cover the same subjects with the later edition including some newer equipment. Both contain extensive circuit diagrams and technical details on the British telecommunications system at the time. Each edition consists of two volumes. These are invaluable reference books.

Title: Old Telephones.
Author: Andrew Emmerson.
Published: Shire Publications Ltd. 1986

Essential reading for those interested in old telephones. Only 32 pages but packed full of interesting information and good quality photographs.

Old Telephones

Title: Telefoni.
Author: Franco Soresini.
Published: BE_MA Editrice 1989.

This Italian book is full of great photographs. There are a few British telephones here but the book is primarily concerned with Italian equipment. The text is limited to descriptions of the telephones in each photograph. Not highly recommended if you are only interested in UK equipment.

Title: Beyond Babel - New directions in communications.
Author: Brenda Maddox.
Published: Andre Deutsch 1972.

This strangely titled book is basically a criticism of the state of the UK telephone network at the start of the 1970s. It is easy to read and has some interesting statistics and great insights into the future of the industry.

Title: Power of Speech.

Title: Between the Lines.
Author: Robert C Morris.

Subtitled: A Personal History of the British Public Telephone and Telecommunications Service 1870-1990. Again, the title says it all! Interesting and some great pictures. Although the "personal" recollections do not, in fact, stretch back to 1870!
